In 2020-21, ALLLM conducted the first landscape study of lifelong learning in theological schools in nearly 40 years. The data provided a key snapshot of directors and their work at an inflection point – the COVID-19 pandemic. You can view a webinar discussion of this research here.

In 2025, the research team conducted the research again to see how the industry has changed in the past five years, which have been eventful in theological education; a preliminary look at the data was shared in June 2025 at the Religious Education Association (REA) conference and can be viewed here. A full report will be published in Fall 2025 and a webinar discussing the key findings will be held on Oct 21, 2025.

Title: Sustaining Ministry Education: Cultivating the Ecotone of Lifelong Learning
Volume Editor: Darryl W. Stephens
Publisher: Atla Open Press
Book Description:
Lifelong learning for ministry is an “ecotone,” a transitional space with its own distinct ecology at the confluence of church, society, and academy. Lifelong learning is also the fastest-growing segment of theological education in North America. Its leaders are on the forefront of educational innovation, attuned to the needs of churches and their communities. This book brings together directors of programs, theological librarians, and other theological educators to share research and best practices of discovery, innovation, nurture, and sustainability. It is designed for leaders in lifelong learning for ministry and those who support their programs in ATS-member schools, church judicatories, and independent educational organizations.
